Before a disaster turns your world upside... Resolve to be Ready!!!
OEM would like to encourage New Yorkers to Resolve to be Ready this year and be prepared for an emergency by taking three steps: (1) Make a Plan, (2) Get a Kit, (3) Be Informed.
It is so important to be ready!!! The main goal of the Ready New York City campaign is to encourage parents to Resolve to be ready and be prepared in the case of an emergency, both small and large, partially by staying informed through OEM’s Facebook page.
Make a Plan:
Develope a Disaster Plan with your Family. Prepare for what to do, how to find each other, and how to communicate in an emergency. Disuss a meeting place and emergency exits. It's always helpful to go over this information and practice your plan.
Get a Kit:
Gather Supplies! It's important to keep at least 3 days worth of supplies.
Important items include:
- Water (one gallon of water per day/per person)
-Non-Perishable,ready to eat food (& Can Opener)
-First aid kit
-Flashlight
-Battery-operated AM/FM radio & extra batteries (you can also buy wind-up radios that do not require batteries)
-Personal hygiene items:like soap,feminine hygiene products,toothbrush & toothpaste
-Phone that does not rely on electricity
-Child care supplies or other special care items(like Baby formula or medicine)
Be Informed!
OEM is branching out and sharing information with New Yorkers in more ways than ever before. On OEM’s Facebook page you can find more information and even take the first step in making a plan by selecting and sharing your own meeting place using the Get Ready NYC: My Meeting Place Facebook application. Also, you can download a Resolve to Be Ready preparation calendar from the site which contains quarterly, monthly, and weekly reminders to help prepare for emergencies, large and small, throughout the year.
Please be ready!! We never know when an emergency is going to happen. Resolve to be Ready!!! Do you have a plan or a kit?
Win it!!!One of my lucky readers can win an Emergency Preparation Kit! The kit consists of a $25 Target gift card, flashlight, AA batteries, travel first aid kit, and protein bars.

I think that you need to "check your kit" periodicly for expired items, low to dead batteries, etc is a great tip. Basically don't make one and "forget it"... stay prepared!

Blizzards/power outages are a constant worry right now- we keep a 2 week supply of food that can be warmed up easily on our woodstove.

I learnd that Designate an out-of-state frinad or relative that household members can call if separated during a disaster. If New York City phone circuits are busy, long-distance calls may be easier to make. This out-of-state contact can help you communication with others

I am learning how to not only protect myself, but also how to help my family friends and neighbors. Everyone should check out CERT. Take a friend and take the class!!
