Also, you can download a Resolve to Be Ready preparation calendar from the site which contains quarterly, monthly, and weekly reminders to help prepare for emergencies, large and small, throughout the year.

I live in hurricane country, so we keep battery-operated radios and wind-up flashlights for when the power is out. We stock extra canned goods and bottled water when the season starts and then if we don't need it for a storm, we eat it over the winter, before it goes bad. Don't forget your pets, and be sure to have extra food and water handy for them, too.

The concept of a Go Bag is interesting. It didn't naturally occur to me to make up a kit to leave with. I thought in terms of a kit to keep in your home (staying there). A Go Bag is a good tip.

The tip I found most useful after visiting the ReadyNYC site is to pack a Go-Bag for the household in the event of an evacuation. It makes perfect sense to take that precaution, and I appreciated the detailed tips for what to include in that bag (including waterproof containers for important documents and cash, and battery operated radios and phones). I need to get busy to better prepare my household for emergencies, that's for sure!

Tip I found most useful is that during an emergency animals will be allowed on public transportation in carriers or large dogs w/muzzle and leash my sister lives in New York--we both are huge animal people and after New Orleans we talked about ---neither of us drive and we have the attitude not leaving without my pets--she needs to get some muzzles in just in case.
